The Hampton Roads Real Estate Symposium is for real estate appraisers, agents/brokers, assessors, attorneys, and anyone involved in the real estate industry. Keynote Speaker: Impact of the Pandemic and Inflation     Simon Stevenson, The Harvey Lindsay School of Real Estate and E.V. Williams Center for Real Estate in the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University

The speaker will discuss the short and long term affects of the Covid pandemic; the impact on the different market segments, the changes and projections in the work environment, and the migration patterns in the housing markets. He will compare the historical economic trends to today's inflation and will conclude with the resilience and innovation in real estate.

Eminent Domain: Legal Changes and Appraisal Challenges  Joseph V. Sherman, P.C.

This presentation will update us on changes in the law that would impact an appraisers analysis; common appraisal problems for appraisers representing landowners as well as condemning authorities

Living on the Edge: Anticipate the Unexpected for Coastal Waterfront Properties        Dr. Mary E. Allen, Ph.D., Lynker Inc, at NOAA Office for Coastal Management        This presentation will cover the benefits, risks and costs of coastal and waterfront properties. Examine the different flood zones and building requirements therein along with clarifying the different property rights. How and why the shorelines are changing and what can be done to mitigate the damage. We will also discuss the projections for future climate and natural hazards, the impact they will make and how they will affect property owners. Lastly, will be a showcase of relevant tools, data and resources from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) which includes a new sea level rise mapping tool, disaster and risk mapping tools, NOAA digital coast data and other training and learning products that are available.

Our Dynamic Coasts - Sea Level Rise and Hampton Roads  Dr. Tom Allen, Department of Political Science & Geography Old Dominion University            Dr. Tom Allen specializes in Geographic Information Science and technology, emphasizing coastal and marine applications of GIS, spatial analysis, remote sensing, and geovisualization.  He will use his knowledge to  show the importance of the changing coasts to our profession.
